Building a Better Future in the Midlands: Pearl Hyde Children's Home, Coventry

Updated: Oct 22

At JMS, we take pride in delivering projects that not only meet our clients' expectations but also contribute positively to the communities we serve.

In our latest post, we explore the JMS Midlands team's recent work on the Pearl Hyde Children's Home in Coventry. This is a prime example of how innovative engineering, sustainable design, and traditional construction methods can come together to create a space that is both functional and inspiring.

Structural Design in a Traditional Framework

The Pearl Hyde Children's Home is a testament to the power of traditional design when combined with modern engineering expertise. Key structural elements include:

Timber Trusses:

We incorporated timber trusses to provide a robust yet lightweight roof structure. Timber, being a renewable resource, aligns with our commitment to sustainability while offering excellent strength and aesthetic appeal.

Steel Framing:

For the roof lights, we utilised steel framing. Steel’s superior tensile strength ensures that these large glazed sections are both stable and durable, allowing natural light to flood the building’s interior.

Load-Bearing Masonry:

The use of load-bearing masonry walls, supported by concrete spread footings, provides the necessary stability while also enhancing the building’s thermal efficiency. This approach ensures a solid foundation, crucial for the longevity of the structure.

Innovative Civil Engineering for Sustainable Living

One of the most significant challenges we faced was the site’s ground conditions, which prohibited traditional surface water infiltration methods. Our solution was to implement a Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) that includes a wildlife pond.

This feature not only addresses drainage needs but also brings additional benefits:

Natural Water Treatment:

The wildlife pond naturally treats surface water runoff, ensuring that only clean water re-enters the environment.

Biodiversity Boost:

By creating a habitat for local wildlife, the pond enhances the site's biodiversity, contributing to the ecological health of the area.

Educational and Aesthetic Value:

The pond also serves as an educational tool and a beautiful feature for the children at the home, helping them connect with nature.
