Accessibility in construction is often thought of in terms of ramps, lifts, and parking spaces. But what about the engineering beneath the surface? How water moves through a site, how drainage is managed, and how flood risks are mitigated all play a crucial role in ensuring a site remains accessible - not just for people, but for the long-term usability of the space itself.


A prime example is our work on a culverted watercourse scheme, where existing site conditions presented a significant accessibility challenge. The site was prone to water accumulation due to ineffective drainage, creating a persistent risk of flooding that could compromise both pedestrian and vehicle access. By implementing a robust Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS), we helped to ensure that the site remains functional and accessible in all conditions.


Engineering Solutions for Practical Accessibility

A poorly designed drainage system can turn a site into an obstacle course. Water pooling in pathways, eroding foundations, or backing up into buildings can render even the most well-planned developments unusable. Civil engineering solutions - such as permeable paving, attenuation tanks, and intelligent drainage design - help keep sites operational and safe, regardless of weather conditions.
