JMS Engineers provided structural and civil engineering services for Brightwell Barns, a sustainable office development near Ipswich, Suffolk. The project features 30 barn-style offices across four buildings, offering modern workspaces with eco-friendly design.
The development prioritised sustainability, incorporating passive solar heating through optimised building orientation and brise soleil shading to control overheating. Double-glazed windows and high-performance insulation ensured excellent thermal efficiency, while reverse cycle air conditioning units linked to air source heat pumps provided energy-efficient heating and cooling.
The civil engineering design included rainwater harvesting systems for grey water reuse, natural drainage solutions, and carefully planned external levels to balance landscaped grounds with functional parking and access. Energy-efficient lighting with motion sensors and natural lighting strategies further reduced energy consumption.
