JMS Engineers provided structural and civil engineering expertise for the extension of Christ Church in Colchester, Essex. The project involved designing steel beams and connections to support new loads, reinforced masonry walls, and a timber framework for roof and floor structures. Structural framing was developed for large openings, ensuring compatibility with specialist glazing systems. Foundations were designed using unreinforced concrete trenches, tailored to site-specific conditions.
Surface and foul water drainage systems incorporated Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) and flow-control measures, with provisions for infiltration or pumped systems based on site surveys. A single-ply polymer roof system complemented the existing structure, while external materials maintained architectural continuity.
JMS Engineers collaborated closely with architects and planners to ensure compliance with building regulations and local authority guidelines, delivering a sustainable, functional, and visually cohesive extension that meets the community's needs while preserving the church’s character.
